Information Regarding Tape Drives
Many people don't go to the lengths of backing their data. It is perceived as too difficult or a high tech process. The truth is that data backup will save valuable time and money. A tape drive device is a reliable method to backing data but it is also known for being slow when it comes to recovery and at times the backup itself.
There are different types of tape drives and differences can vary by product manufacturer. The 3490E tape drive is one of IBM's top choices when it comes to tape drive devices. It doesn't hold as much data as some other leading tape drives but it is reputed for fast access time and a high level of reliability. It is also easily acceptable as an interchange standard. It does have its disadvantages though, low capacity and high drive cost can work together to be very inefficient, depending on your needs.
The DLT 7000 is one of the leaders when it comes to data space storage. It holds 35 GB of information. The speed of data transfer when copying is 5 MB per second. It has a very high cartridge capacity and is in the average cost range. It can get expensive if you need to buy plenty of cartridges though. With mass amounts of data it's better to look into every option before settling with just one.
The two most common tape drive types are the 4mm and the 8mm. A helical scan is used to rotate the tape and copy the information. This method can reduce the stress put on a tape and prevent wear and tear. A pro to the 8mm tape drive is that the device is usually low cost. It also transfers data at a reasonable speed as well as having a reasonably high cartridge capacity. Everything has its disadvantages when it comes to data backup. A major con to this method is that the tapes have never remained in existence as long as the predicted shelf life, which does lead one to question. A 4mm drive is low cost and of small form factor. It does have slow transfer rates though and regular replacements will be needed over time. When comparing a DLT 7000 tape drive to a 3490E drive it is easier to see which comes out the winner if it's cartridge capacity that you're after. The thread load time is rather slow in comparison but it is effective as a storage device. The cartridge price is also much higher than the 3490E cartridge. After comparing performance of the two in regards to price, the 3490E may be the better bet. Of course, it's important to know what you are really deciding on before making any choices. Knowledge is key when making a financial decision regarding your vital information. Tapes and tape drives aren't for everyone but they are tried and true. Take the time to see if they are a successful choice for your data.
